Agricultural Education Minors

Agricultural Education Minor

This course of study focuses on the learning and teaching of agricultural topics in informal settings. The minor requires 15 credit hours of agricultural education course work with at least six credit hours at the 3000 level or above.

Leadership Minor

Vision Statement:

Every MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) graduate is expected and should be prepared to be a leader in his/her profession and community. Public speaking, analytical reasoning, critical thinking, effective writing and group work are vital parts of leadership and, indeed, of most careers. Every graduate should be a leader in the community in some capacity, be it through the local PTA, volunteer work or church activities. In addition, we hope to encourage civic participation on the state, regional, national and international levels. It is our belief that in this rapidly changing world, now is an opportune time to train leaders equipped with the practical, visionary and ethical skills that will be needed well into the future.

Goals:

Our goals are to prepare graduates of the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources for leadership positions in their careers as well as within their communities and to encourage them to assume such roles.

After completing the leadership course sequence, CAFNR students will be able to:

  • Apply their understanding of the leadership process through involvement in activities outside of the classroom.
  • Carry out the practical skills necessary for those in leadership positions such as composing oral and written communications, organizing groups and holding effective meetings.
  • Create overarching visions of personal, organizational and community goals and understand how to empower and motivate others toward these goals.
  • Make ethical decisions.

Requirements for a Minor in Leadership:

Each student will be required to take a total of four formal courses (12 hours) and three hours of leadership practicum for a total of 15 hours. The leadership practicum is intended to provide students the opportunity to develop their skills and apply the principles of leadership. The practicum experience can be in the student's major area, but the student must get the approval of the Coordinator of the Leadership Minor, and the student should have one or more of the leadership faculty (listed below) as an adviser.
